What type of environment do Carpenter Ants thrive in?

Carpenter ants are known for their ability to excavate wood to create their nests, and they thrive in environments that consist of both moist and sound wood. The presence of moisture in wood is essential for carpenter ants, as damp wood is easier for them to burrow into, but they can also make their homes in sound, or healthy, wood as long as it meets their nesting needs.

This dual preference allows carpenter ants versatility in their choice of habitats. They are often found in structures like homes and buildings, as well as in tree trunks and stumps in forests. Their activity is more pronounced in areas where wood is compromised, such as near water leaks or where wood has begun to decay; however, healthy wood can also support their nesting behavior, especially if it’s near a source of moisture.
